Today during buddies, we read Olive the Other Reindeer, about a dog who thinks she's a reindeer and then, by helping Santa, earns her own set of reindeer antlers.  We then each made our own set of reindeer antlers.  Oh what fun...!

Mike Byster Visited Today!!

And it was great!!  Ask your child about it - incredible math calculations, fun with numbers, looking for and realizing patterns, memorizing a list of items by making up a story or song or poem!  His message: if it isn't working one way, try another way until you find a way that works;  it's all about focus and following directions and never giving up.  Thanks to Mrs. Belkind for arranging our assembly this morning.  It was "SUM THING AMAZING," and we'll never forget it.   If you want to know more - more cool math or memory tricks -, go to   or if you have questions contact him directly at

Donations can be brought to classrooms.  There is a collection box in each classroom for items.

Day of Giving 2016

What is it?

Day of Giving began as a food collection program and has transformed into a day where families in need can come get food, clothes, coats, books, toiletries and toys that have been donated by local community members. We began hosting the event in 2011 and were able to help provide for 12 families our first year. The next year, almost 200 families came. This past year, we were able to assist over 400 people.  Our goal is to help provide for families in need in our local community.

When is it?

This year, Day of Giving will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 6:00-9:30am.  Every year, Day of Giving is located at the Elm Place Middle School gym in Highland Park, IL.

Who is it for?

Anyone who could use assistance providing for themselves and their family.

What can I do to help?

Help us by starting to collect items. Clean out your closets! Look for food deals! Bring in toiletries, books, winter-wear, food, toys, games, etc. We take all items! Anything can help.

Start bringing in items ASAP to Elm Place School!

Saying So Long to a Friend

Friday was Daja's last day with us.  At the end of the day, she chose to have some free time in the classroom and then go outside.  Before we went out the door, I took some photos.  All the best to you in your new school, Daja!  We'll miss you!!

Separating a Dry Mixture!

Today in science, students acted as an engineer would and designed a plan to separate three known materials and one unknown material from a dry mixture.  They put their understanding of materials and their properties to use, as well as their past experiences with the first two parts of the investigation to develop successful plans!  Take a look:)

Hello everyone,

In light of the oppressive heat up here on the second floor, there will be no formal presentation in our classrooms this year at Open House. We are looking forward to meeting you on Thursday night in our classrooms!  Come in, take a look around, say hello, ask questions if you have them, leave a letter for your child, and leave when you’d like.  And be sure to introduce yourself to the other teachers in the building who are part of your child’s day.

The slideshow is linked here on the right.

See you Thursday night!

If your child is concerned about their clothes, please have them bring a smock to school. Some examples are an old large t-shirt, and old button-down shirt, or a School Smart full protection vinyl smock. Students should try to avoid wearing their best clothes and shoes on the day they have art.
